Education & Experience

  • 1981 - Qualified from UCD medical school and trained in St. Vincent’s Hospital before moving to the University of Minnesota USA.
  • 1991-1996 - He held the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Minnesota
  • 1996 - Promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 1996.


Clinical Research & Professinal Memberships

Prof. Ken McDonald developed the St. Vincent's/St. Michael’s Heart Failure Unit following his return from his sub-speciality training in heart failure at the University of Minnesota, USA. He has overseen the growth of the Unit into an internationally recognised clinical service and translational heart failure research centreThe unit has close collaborative links with similarly focused units in the US and Europe. Professor McDonald is an ex-president of the Irish Cardiac Society, the Medical Director of the Heartbeat Trust and presently holds the position of the National Clinical Lead for Cardiology in Ireland as part of the Health Services Executive Clinical Programmes.

Prof McDonald has published more than 100 peer reviewed articles. In addition to the clinical services provided to more than 4,000 patients with or at risk of heart failure, Prof McDonald has an active research programme that aims to unlock the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of a number of markers of fibrosis and inflammation in left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure.
