Endocrine Surgery
Three of the surgeons within our Maple Centre have a specialist interest in managing patients with endocrine disorders, namely thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease. With improvements in pathways of referral, and centralisation of such specialist surgery, the demand for this service will continue to expand.
With an increasing awareness amongst GPs, and more ready availability of biochemical analysis and DEXA scanning, the number of cases of primary hyperparathyroidism that we see is set to rise exponentially. Surgery offers the only definite cure for these patients.
Here at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, we offer access to world-class pre-operative radiological investigations that allow us to offer our patients minimally invasive surgery in a timely manner.
Here in Ireland, the incidence of thyroid cancer continues to rise. This is due to a combination of increased imaging in the neck, and increased awareness of the disease. St. Vincent’s Private Hospital provides a multi-disciplinary service for these patients with access to surgical expertise, an endocrinologist with a specialist interest in thyroid disorders, and radiation oncologists who can provide the necessary adjuvant treatments.
All malignant or suspicious thyroid lesions are discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting with includes specialists from endocrinology, diagnostic radiology, pathology and surgical, radiation and medical oncology.
Finally, increased radiological imaging of the abdomen has seen a dramatic increase in the number of adrenal incidentalomas that require investigation. Surgical management of adrenal disorders is a vibrant and expanding practice in St. Vincent’s Healthcare group. We have expertise within the group to fully investigate these disorders and manage these patients appropriately, with laparoscopic techniques where advisable.
