Internal Radiation
This type of radiation therapy is known as brachytherapy and is available in two forms- Low Dose Rate (LDR) and High Dose Rate (HDR).
Brachytherapy is very specific and may be used to deliver a large radiation dose to a specific organ or region while minimising the dose to the surrounding tissue. At St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, these modalities are used mainly to treat cancers in the prostate gland, cervix and womb, bile duct, oesophagus and lung.
It may also be used in addition to external beam radiotherapy to boost the site of treatment. Such areas include the cervix and post mastectomy chest walls.
