Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
St. Vincent’s Private Hospital perform all invasive diagnostic or interventional procedures in our Cardiac Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab).
Patients referred to the Cardiac Cath Lab will be admitted under the care of a Consultant Cardiologist, who will perform all invasive diagnostic or interventional procedures. There is no need for patients to bring referral documentation on the day of the procedure.
Optical Coherence Tomography is used to visualise the internal walls of the coronary artery in order to determine how narrow the vessel is at various points. Unlike IVUS, which uses ultrasound, OCT uses light to obtain 3D images of the vessel. Like IVUS, it may also be used to assess an existing stent for restenosis or to check that a stent is appropriately deployed.
Both IVUS and OCT can be performed as part of the angiogram procedure.
