Diagnostic studies are required to differentiate between the various sleep disorders.
St.Vincent’s Private Hospital offers one of the few labs who supervise overnight study to give our patients a more accurate result.
These studies take place overnight and include detailed monitoring of sleep and respiratory patterns and limb movements, Polysomnography, including video.
All studies are continuously supervised by dedicated scientists which offers reassurance to the patient and ensures a high standard of overnight recording. Expert analysis of sleep and respiratory patterns follows.
CPAP: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure:
Patients diagnosed with OSA are referred for treatment assessment with CPAP overnight study which will assess the optimum pressure (prescription) for each patient.
- This study will include:
Education session with respiratory scientist (DVD’s literature etc)(important fact)
Demonstration of CPAP
- Mask fitting
- Supervised overnight monitoring by dedicated staff
Following the study, provision of CPAP is arranged. The unit also offers support & follow-up for patients on treatment
Auto-Servo CPAP (ASV)

Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)
Patients who opt for treatment with a MAD (specially fitted dental device) may be referred for a repeat sleep study while wearing the device, to assess the efficacy of treatment.
MSLT (Maintenance Sleep Latency Test) and MWT (Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests) – test for sleepiness
Controlled daytime sleep studies where patient takes a series of scheduled naps throughout the day, Patients are asked to try and fall asleep (MSLT) or to stay awake (MWT). The results, including time taken to fall asleep (sleep latency) and sleep stages attained within nap time, are used to give an objective measurement of sleepiness.
