St. Vincent’s Private Hospital held another GP Study Evening on Wednesday, 13th June 2018 in the Atrium of the hospital. The event was a great success with close to 70 GP’s attending from Dublin and beyond. The Study Evening was chaired by Dr. Michael O’Doherty, Gorey Medical Practice, and the event was sponsored by St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group (SVHG). This event was CME accredited by the ICGP.
The lack of dedicated resources for an obesity treatment and management programme means some patients have been waiting for up to five years for bariatric surgery in Ireland. Obesity or bariatric surgery offers the most successful and cost-effective option for the treatment of people with severe obesity and complications such as type 2 diabetes.
Our first speaker, Dr. John Garvey, Respiratory Consultant, explained the link between obesity and sleep apnoea and why intentional weight loss improves sleep disordered breathing. Professor Carel Le Roux, Consultant in Chemical Pathology, addressed the other benefits of weight loss and specifically what can be achieved with diet, exercise and medication. Our Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Dr. Helen Heneghan, our final speaker, addressed the benefits of surgery – specifically pertaining to sleep apnoea but also highlighting the many other benefits of surgery.
These events facilitate discussion of new clinical initiatives relevant to primary care and the introduction of new consultants to local GPs. They provide an excellent opportunity for informal interaction between primary care practitioners and hospital-based specialists within SVHG. We continue to strive, in collaboration with our GP facilitators, to optimise the educational value of this annual meeting.
