Introduction

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is often referred to as a bone mineral density (BMD) test. It is an important diagnostic tool which can measure the amount of calcium in certain bones but also calculates an estimate of the risk of fracture. This diagnostic test assists in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. At SVPH, DEXA examinations estimate the amount of bone mineral content in specific areas of your body by measuring the amount of X-rays that are absorbed by your bones in the body. Two X-ray energies are used and enable the Radiologist to differentiate between bone and soft tissue, allowing an accurate estimation of bone density. DEXA scans are also used to monitor a patient’s response to particular medications which are prescribed to improve bone density over time.

Note: DEXA is often confused with a nuclear medicine bone scan.  A BMD test (DEXA) is different; it does not require a radionuclide injection and is much faster.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a common condition where bones become thin, weak, and more likely to break. It develops gradually over time and often has no symptoms until a fracture occurs—commonly in the hip, spine, or wrist. Our bones naturally lose density as we age, but osteoporosis causes this loss to happen faster than normal. Early detection is imperative to ensure the best treatment options are availed of.

DEXA scans are quick and pain-free. Please follow these instructions prior to your examination:

  • Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to your appointment. Apart from this you may continue with all other prescribed medication.

  • If you have consumed oral contrast or have had a radionuclide bone scan within 7 days of your DEXA scan, please contact the Radiology Department to re-schedule your appointment. You must wait at least 7 days before re- scheduling your DEXA scan to ensure the results are not affected.
  • You may eat and drink as normal prior to your scan

  • You will be given a hospital gown to change into. You may not need to change if all clothing worn has no metal ( zips, underwired bra)

  • If you have any concerns with mobility please let us know by contacting us prior to your appointment – so we can ensure your comfort and safety.

You will be positioned on the DEXA table where you can breathe as normal for the duration of the scan. The arm of the scanner will pass over the area of interest; your spine and hip. You will hear the scanner move. Scan time is short and you will need to remain still for up to 4 minutes at a time. The entire examination should take about 15 minutes

The results of your scan will be reviewed and reported by a specialist Radiologist. Results may take 3-5 working days. Results go back to your referring Doctor.
