Breast MRI is a specialised imaging examination that uses magnetic resonance imaging to produce detailed images of breast tissue. It does not use ionising radiation.
Breast MRI may be recommended for selected patients when additional information is required to assess breast tissue or investigate a particular clinical concern.
Whether MRI is appropriate will depend on your individual circumstances and your referring Consultant’s assessment.
Please note that our Radiology service is unable to facilitate breast MRI as a standalone investigation where the patient’s breast imaging and/or clinical care pathway has commenced at another hospital.
Accordingly, referrals for breast MRI alone from an externally commenced breast imaging pathway will not be accepted unless there is an agreed transfer of your breast care to one of our breast surgeons. They would then assume responsibility for the ongoing management of further imaging, intervention or follow-up required.
Location: Breast MRI is performed in the Radiology Department on the ground floor of St Vincent’s Private Hospital.
