Cardiology
Echocardiogram On hold
This service is performed in our outpatients department by highly skilled and qualified Cardiac Physiologists. The images and reports are also reviewed and authorised by your Consultant Cardiologist.
You will not need to do anything to prepare for this test. Please take a list of your medication in case it is needed. If you have a hearing aid, please wear it as normal. There are no X-Rays involved. Please let us know when you arrive if you have a difficulty with mobility or lying flat.
This procedure is painless. You will be required to lie on a couch on your left side (if possible) for most of the procedure in order to get the best image of the heart. Your left hand should be raised and placed under or near your head. Three electrodes (harmless stickers) will be placed on your body to record the heart rhythm. The Cardiac Physiologist will sit beside you and apply a probe with a small amount of water-based gel to your chest. You may feel a slight pressure or discomfort. The probe may be moved around to different places on your chest. It may also be placed on your tummy and under your chin. It usually takes between 20-40 minutes to complete.
You will be able to return to normal after the test. The results will be sent to your referring doctor within 3-5 working days.
No aftercare is necessary.
