The Triple Assessment Clinic provides specialist assessment for patients referred with breast symptoms or signs that require urgent investigation. The clinic operates on either Monday or Thursday mornings. A TAC appointment can last up to 4 hours.
Appointments are arranged following review of the referral by a consultant and in accordance with the relevant clinical guidance.
Triple assessment combines three elements:
- Breast Imaging
Appropriate imaging to investigate the area of concern. This may include tomosynthesis mammography, generally for patients aged 35 years and older, and ultrasound, depending on clinical requirements. - Tissue Sampling (Where Indicated)
If imaging or clinical assessment identifies a suspicious abnormality, a needle biopsy/aspirate may be recommended to obtain a tissue sample for laboratory analysis.
Not every patient referred to the Triple Assessment Clinic will require all three elements, and a biopsy is not necessary in every case. - Clinical Assessment
A consultation and examination with a Consultant Breast Surgeon to assess your symptoms and clinical findings.
