This test will evaluate the anorectal (back passage) and pelvic floor functions during defecation.

There is no preparation but it would be helpful if you passed urine and have opened your bowels before the test. Please arrive 1 hour before your appointment time.

For female patients: If you are still of childbearing age please book your appointment within the first 10 day of your menstrual cycle.

You will be given one cup of barium to drink 30 mins prior to the procedure.

You will be brought into the cubicle where you will be asked some questions about your problem and if relevant the delivery of your children.

Female patients will asked to place a tampon with some x-ray dye on it into the vagina.

You will be asked to lay down on the couch on your left side and the Radiologist will perform a quick rectal examination.

A small tube will be placed in the rectum and the barium paste inserted into the back passage until you feel full and like you need to defecate.

You will then sit on a commode besides the x-ray tube and the X-ray images will be taken of the pelvis.

Pictures will be taken at rest, ‘squeezing’ the muscles of the pelvis, coughing, straining and defecating.
Female patients will be asked to remove the tampon prior to leaving the department.
The x-ray images will be reported by the radiologist and the results will be forwarded to your doctor within 5 working days.
