Education & Training

Professor Jonathan Lyne is the leading Irish cardiologist specialising in heart rhythm problems (Cardiac Electrophysiology) and one of the highest volume specialists in this field in Europe.  He is available to see any patient with a heart rhythm problem in his clinic, usually within days of referral, or more urgent if needed.

Professor Lyne grew up in Sussex and was admitted to Cambridge University where he excelled in his medical education, graduating at the very top of his peer group with special distinctions in medicine and surgery. Following graduation he trained in cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London where he had the opportunity to train directly with some of the world’s leading arrhythmia specialists. He was appointed as a full time consultant in cardiac electrophysiology at the Royal Brompton where he quickly became one of the most sought after specialists in his field both private and publicly.

Having married an Irish wife he moved to Dublin over a decade ago and established a busy private practice as the first cardiologist in Ireland specialising exclusively in electrophysiology (arrhythmia). He has developed an easily accessible and comprehensive service specialising in the diagnosis, management and interventional treatment of common rhythm disorders including Atrial Fibrillation, Atrial Flutter, Wolff Parkinson White syndrome and Supraventricular tachycardias as well as insertion of pacing devices (pacemakers) for both rhythm problems and heart failure management. Professor Lyne treats many patients with atrial fibrillation, allowing him to have an exceptionally low complication rate. He has treated many professional sports players, is a technical advisor to a number of major medical technology companies and usually receives any new emerging technologies first within the Irish market. His expertise has been recognised by many learned professional bodies and he has been appointed an Associate Clinical Professor at University College Dublin, a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a board member of the Irish Cardiac Society.
