Mr. Woods was appointed as a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at St Vincent’s University Hospital in 2024. A graduate of both Oxford University and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he holds degrees in Medicine (First Class Honours), a Master of Surgery, and a Master’s in Medical Education. During training, he won the JJ Fitzsimons Gold Medal in Surgery. He completed his specialist training in Plastic Surgery in Ireland and was awarded Fellowship of both the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Plast) and the European Board of Hand Surgery (FEBHS).
Following his higher surgical training in Ireland, Mr. Woods continued to develop his skills with international experience including:
- Aesthetic Surgery BAAPS/BAPRAS Fellowship in at the Cadogan Clinic in London.
- Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York
- Skin Cancer and Head/Neck Surgery Fellowship at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust
He has received numerous academic awards throughout his career, including multiple national prizes for best presentation and clinical research, and has a strong record of achievement in surgical education, service development, and innovation.
Clinical Research and Professional Memberships
Mr. Woods is widely published, with over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, multiple textbook chapters—including contributions to Grabb and Smith’s Plastic Surgery and Clinical Scenarios in Reconstructive Microsurgery—and frequent national and international presentations in aesthetic, reconstructive, and hand surgery. His work spans microsurgical reconstruction, lymphatic surgery, head and neck oncology, and surgical education.
He is the recipient of HSE SPARK Innovation and RCSI research grants and has led initiatives including antimicrobial stewardship in surgery, virtual hand trauma services, and service audits across multiple institutions. He is an active member of the Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network and has held governance roles such as Lead NCHD and Audit Committee Member at St Vincent’s University Hospital.
Mr. Woods maintains a particular interest in aesthetic surgery, skin cancer and complex oncologic reconstruction, and is committed to advancing patient-centred, evidence-based practice in both public and private sectors. He sits on the clinical advisory board of The Aesthetics Magazine. He is a member of the Irish Association of Plastic Surgery, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
