Education & Experience
Professor Gallagher is an honours graduate of RCSI School of Medicine. After higher surgical training in general surgery in Dublin, he completed fellowships in complex hepatobilary and transplant surgery in world-renowned centres; at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Queen Mary’s Hospital, Hong Kong; and in Northwestern University Memorial Hospital, Chicago. He was appointed to St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group in 2015 as a consultant Hepatobiliary (HPB) and Transplant Surgeon. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery in UCD and supervises a research lab on pancreas cancer. He sits of the executive committee of the European HPB Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the European board of surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons.
Clinical Focus

Acute and chronic pancreatitis.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN)

Whipple procedure: Removal of the head of the pancreas gland

Other Pancreatic resections: Perform distal pancreatectomy (removing the tail of the pancreas and possibly part of the pancreas body or spleen) or total pancreatectomy (removing the entire pancreas, gallbladder, spleen and part of the stomach and small intestine).

Vascular resections: Remove or reconstruct blood vessels for pancreatic cancer that has invaded major veins or arteries. This highly complex technique is not widely available.

Pancreatic necrosectomy: Remove pancreatic necrosis (dead pancreatic tissue), a serious complication of acute pancreatitis.

Liver cancer, including colorectal liver metastases, hepatocellular carcinoma, and less common malignancies

Liver disease, including liver cysts, abscesses and other lesions

Liver resection: Specialising in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery for liver cancer and benign liver growths. Major resections for complex metastatic tumours.

Bile duct repair: Treats bile duct injuries, leaks and blockages

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: Performs minimally invasive gallbladder removal for gallstones, cancer, pancreatitis or cholecystitis
