What is an X-ray?

An X-ray (radiograph) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.  X-rays involve exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionising radiation to produce images of the body. The X-rays pass from the X-ray machine through the area of interest in the body which are translated into images. It is a completely painless procedure.

General X-Ray Services Offered

  • Chest, abdominal and pelvic x-rays

  • Joint and musculoskeletal x-rays (hands, wrist, elbows, feet, shoulders etc.)

  • Fluoroscopic procedures/studies.

Benefits of Medical Imaging

Medical imaging provide very real benefits to patients. All ionising procedures are clinically justified to ensure the net benefit exceeds any small risk involved.

X-Rays can aide in:

  • Identifying common chest pathologies (consolidation, pneumothorax, fluid, nodules, pleural effusions)

  • Assessing joint dislocation and fractures

  • Demonstrating proper alignment and appearance of the vertebra in the presence of neck pain and back pain

  • Guiding orthopaedic surgery for joint replacements, fracture reduction and spinal repair

  • Diagnosing arthritis or osteoporosis

  • Assessing the presence of foreign bodies

  • Assessing for the presence of bone cancer

How should I prepare for the examination?

A general X-ray examination requires no special preparation.
You may be asked to remove some clothing and wear a gown during the exam if there is any metal which will interfere with the X-ray. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, removable dentures and glasses for the duration of the X-ray.

Pregnancy

Female patients of childbearing age will be asked to comply with clinic protocols to limit radiation effects to an unsuspected pregnancy. If you are unsure whether you are pregnant or not, please mention this to the radiographer before the start of your examination.
